Surprisingly large amounts of discarded trash end up in the ocean. Plastic bags, aluminum cans, and fishing debris not only clutter our beaches, but accumulate in open-ocean areas such as the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch.” Now, a paper by researchers at MBARI shows that trash is also accumulating in the deep sea, particularly in Monterey Canyon.

Day two of the Ecohab experiments and we experienced so many start and stop operations. This is just great fodder for some portraits and a little on-deck fun, as you can see. Some people love to pose for the camera, and others just tolerate a little photobug. Either way, its a captive audience.

The CTD "Rosette" heads over the side of the ship and will be lowered shortly. It will return with canisters full of water.

Erich studies the real-time data presented from the CTD as it decends.

Here are some photos taken at sea during a very typical CTD data gathering effort. Scientists and technicians work together to optimize data collection as we investigate the basic chemistry of the ocean. This sort of data is fundamental to the better understanding of the many phenomena observed.

Thanks to Erich and Holly here for posing for me. They are actually working, though.
